四国遍路は、弘法大師空海が修行したと伝えられる四国八十八ヶ所の寺院を巡る壮大な巡礼の旅です。
約千二百の歴史があり、その全行程は約千二百キロにも及びます。
かつては困難で厳しい修行の道でしたが、現在は、長距離トレイルへのチャレンジ、自分を見つめる旅、
歴史や文化を訪ねる旅として訪れる人も多く、国籍や宗教を超えて多くの旅人を迎え入れています。

What is The Shikoku Pilgrimage?

The Shikoku Pilgrimage is a grand tour of the 88 sacred temples on Shikoku Island where Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai) performed ascetic practice.
It has a history of about 1,200 years and a total length of about 1,200 kilometers.
It was once a severe and harsh journey of ascetic practice. Recently it has attracted many people of all nationalities and religions who challenge the long trail, reflect on themselves, or just enjoy history and culture.

古くから四国には弘法大師空海とゆかりのある寺院や行場がたくさんあり、
そのうち江戸時代に選抜された八十八の寺院が「四国八十八ヶ所霊場」として現在に至っています。
八十八の寺院はおおむね四国の海岸線に沿って点在していて、
これらをたどりながら歩くと、最終的に四国島を一周することになります。

What are the 88 sacred places in Shikoku?

Among them, 88 temples selected in the Edo period (1603-1867) are called the "88 sacred sites of Shikoku."
